KARACHI: The Sindh government has allocated Rs1.5 billion for the repair and reconstruction of roads damaged by recent rains in Karachi. The decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and attended by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Provincial Ministers Nasir Shah and Saeed Ghani, as well as other officials.
According to the Chief Minister’s spokesperson, the funds will be directed towards repairing rain-affected roads across Karachi’s seven districts. Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani reported that the rains had caused significant damage to the city’s road infrastructure, requiring immediate patchwork and repairs.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the Sindh government had previously completed road construction following the 2022 rains and continues to support the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Karachi Development Authority (KDA) with funding for road repairs. Shah stressed the importance of maintaining the highest construction standards and called for an investigation into prematurely deteriorated roads, vowing strict action against those responsible for substandard work.
The Chief Minister also instructed KMC officials to ensure proper drainage systems and service lines are incorporated into new road projects. He highlighted the need for repairs on flyovers and bridges across Karachi, particularly in the South, East, Central, West, Korangi, and Malir districts.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that Rs1.5 billion will be sufficient to cover the costs of the proposed projects and pledged to commence work immediately to improve the city’s infrastructure.
