The Sindh government has imposed a daytime ban on dumpers entering Karachi in a bid to reduce road accidents and improve traffic flow. Dumpers will now only be allowed on city roads between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Sindh Asif Hyder Shah, attended by key officials including the Inspector General Sindh Police, Commissioner Karachi, and DIG Traffic. The move comes in response to rising road accidents involving heavy vehicles and concerns over weak enforcement of traffic laws.
New Safety Measures Announced
To further enhance road safety, the government has announced the following measures:
- Mandatory Physical Verification: All heavy vehicles and drivers must undergo inspections to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
- QR Code Certification: The Transport Department will issue QR Code-certified certificates for vehicles operating within the city.
- Solid Waste Management & Water Tanker Regulations:
- The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has been instructed to shift its operations to nighttime within three months.
- The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board’s tankers must undergo inspections within a month to ensure roadworthiness.
- Strict Enforcement of Helmet Laws: Traffic police have been ordered to strictly enforce helmet laws for motorcyclists and launch a media awareness campaign.
- Traffic Fines Increased Fourfold: To deter violations, fines will be increased four times, and reckless drivers will face FIRs and legal action instead of just fines.
Long-Term Road Safety Plans
Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah also announced plans to:
- Implement a Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (VICS) across Sindh to ensure all vehicles meet safety standards.
- Revive the Traffic Engineering Bureau to develop long-term traffic management solutions.
Motorcycle Accidents a Major Concern
Officials highlighted that motorcycles make up 65% of vehicles in Karachi, and motorcyclists account for 55% of all road accidents. The DIG Traffic has been directed to improve traffic conditions within a month and enforce road safety regulations more strictly.
With these steps, the Sindh government aims to create safer roads and reduce traffic congestion in Karachi.
