In a monumental stride towards alleviating the burdens of load shedding and soaring electricity costs, the Sindh government has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to provide free electricity to residents consuming up to 100 units.
During a press conference, Sindh Energy Minister Nasir Hussain Shah disclosed the comprehensive strategy, which entails harnessing solar power through a network of solar parks and mini-grid stations. “The government is committed to eradicating energy poverty in Sindh,” Shah affirmed.
With an initial allocation of Rs5 billion in the budget earmarked for solar energy initiatives, the government aims to empower communities by ensuring access to sustainable and affordable electricity. Moreover, in a bid to extend the benefits of renewable energy to low-income and middle-class households, Shah announced a subsidized scheme for solar panels. Under this program, 200,000 solar panels will be provided at heavily discounted rates, with the government covering 80% of the cost, leaving consumers responsible for just 20%.
Highlighting the dire need for electrification in the region, Shah underscored plans to deploy solar infrastructure across Sindh, including Karachi, where approximately 500,000 households currently lack access to electricity. “Our mission is to light up every home in Sindh,” Shah emphasized, outlining the government’s commitment to equitable energy distribution.
This ambitious endeavor not only promises relief to struggling consumers but also underscores Sindh’s proactive stance towards sustainable development and renewable energy adoption. As the province strides towards a brighter, more energy-efficient future, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope for residents grappling with energy challenges.
