In a pioneering move towards infant welfare, Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Pechuho inaugurated Pakistan’s inaugural Shariah-compliant Human Milk Bank and Early Childhood Centre at the Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN) in Karachi. Established with vital support from Unicef, this groundbreaking facility aims to provide essential donor milk to infants who are unable to access their mother’s milk.
During the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Azra Pechuho underscored the critical significance of mother’s milk for ensuring newborns’ optimal nutrition and immunity. This initiative is poised to address the pressing need for accessible and safe donor milk for infants, ensuring their healthy development.
Professor Jamal Raza, speaking at the event, highlighted the comprehensive role of the facility in collecting, processing, and distributing donor milk while adhering to Shariah principles. This ensures not only the nutritional welfare of infants but also maintains cultural and religious sensitivities.
Abdullah Fadil, representing Unicef, expressed firm commitment to supporting similar initiatives across Pakistan, affirming Unicef’s dedication to advancing child health and well-being nationwide.
