UK-based Sky News deleted a tweet earlier this week that reported on Israeli football fans from Maccabi Tel Aviv engaging in racist behavior ahead of a UEFA Europa League match in Amsterdam. The tweet claimed that Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters tore down Palestinian flags and chanted anti-Arab slogans, but it is unclear when it was removed.
The incident, which occurred during a minute of silence for flood victims in Spain, saw Israeli fans whistle, chant, and shout inflammatory remarks. Eyewitness reports and videos shared on social media depict Maccabi fans vandalizing property, assaulting bystanders, and even setting a Palestinian flag on fire. At least 62 people have been detained in connection with the violence that broke out in the city following the match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ajax.
The removal of the tweet drew criticism on social media, with some accusing Sky News of censoring the coverage. Asa Winstanley, an investigative journalist of Jewish origin, called out the news outlet, stating that the video exposed the truth about the violent actions of Israeli football hooligans.
The violent clashes have sparked widespread condemnation, with Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, condemning the actions as “attacks on Israeli citizens” and demanding swift action from Dutch authorities.
