Starbucks has announced the closure of 50 stores across Malaysia, citing a significant decline in sales following widespread boycotts. The boycott, initiated over alleged political affiliations and global controversies, has sparked a massive response, with customers turning to local alternatives.
A Starbucks Malaysia spokesperson confirmed the closures, attributing the decision to “challenging business conditions and declining foot traffic.” The boycott, heavily fueled by social media campaigns, has gained traction among Malaysian consumers.
Local café owners have reported an increase in business as Malaysians opt for homegrown coffee brands. “This is a wake-up call for international chains to be more aware of local sentiments,” said Amirul Hashim, the owner of a popular local café in Kuala Lumpur.
While Starbucks has not disclosed whether more closures are expected, the company has emphasized its commitment to rebuilding trust and maintaining its presence in the Malaysian market
