Sindh is grappling with a worsening stray dog crisis, as recent data reveals a significant rise in attacks throughout the province. In 2024, nearly 300,000 people suffered dog bites, with Karachi emerging as the hardest-hit city.
The provincial capital reported 18 fatalities linked to dog bites and over 70,000 injuries. Hospitals in Karachi are overwhelmed by the surge, with Jinnah Hospital recording more than 47,000 cases and 11 deaths due to a critical shortage of vaccines. Indus Hospital treated 15,000 cases, reporting seven rabies-related deaths, while Civil Hospital managed over 36,000 incidents, administering anti-rabies vaccines to 16,150 patients.
Dr. Romana Farhat, head of the Dog Bite Clinic at Civil Hospital, expressed deep concern over the situation, highlighting that children are particularly vulnerable. She urged immediate measures to address the root causes of the crisis and prevent further attacks.
Hotspots such as Baldia, Surjani, and Lyari are particularly affected, prompting public outcry for swift action. Medical professionals recommend thorough cleaning of bite wounds with detergent for 15–20 minutes as an immediate first response.
With hospitals stretched thin and fatalities rising, the stray dog menace demands urgent attention from authorities to safeguard public health and prevent further tragedies.
