SUKKUR: The Sukkur Barrage, a vital irrigation and water regulation system on the Indus River, has been temporarily closed for 15 days to facilitate essential cleaning and renovation work. The closure, which began on January 6, 2025, aims to ensure the long-term efficiency and structural stability of the 91-year-old barrage.
Officials from the Sindh Irrigation Department confirmed that the maintenance includes desilting, structural repairs, and the inspection of gates and canals. This routine upkeep is crucial for optimizing water distribution to millions of acres of agricultural land in Sindh, a region heavily dependent on the barrage for its irrigation needs.
Farmers and industries relying on the barrage’s water supply have been advised to adjust their activities accordingly during this maintenance period. Authorities have assured that the cleaning and renovation work is on a strict timeline and will be completed promptly to avoid extended disruptions.
The Sukkur Barrage, constructed in 1932, remains one of Pakistan’s most significant irrigation projects, playing a key role in the agricultural and economic stability of the region.
