In a daring attempt, militants launched an assault on a police checkpost in the Tonsa area of southern Punjab, sparking a fierce gunbattle with law enforcement personnel. This marked the first such attack in the region, raising concerns about escalating terrorism beyond its traditional strongholds.
The onslaught unfolded under the cover of darkness on Tuesday night, as a group of 15-20 militants unleashed a coordinated assault from multiple directions, armed with an array of sophisticated weaponry including rocket launchers, hand grenades, and laser-guided guns.
Despite the odds stacked against them, seven valiant police officers stationed at the Jhang post courageously engaged the assailants. In the intense firefight, they sustained injuries while staunchly defending their outpost. Among the wounded were ASI Imran and Constables Aamir, Ashiq, Rahmatullah, Sanaullah, and Tariq. Elite Constable Shahid Manzoor, critically injured, was rushed to Nishtar Hospital in Multan for urgent medical care.
Punjab Police spokesperson highlighted the terrorists’ audacious tactics, emphasizing their determination to disrupt peace and stability. However, their nefarious intentions were met with resolute resistance from the brave officers, who repelled the attackers and safeguarded the checkpost.
Inspector General of Punjab Police, Usman Anwar, reiterated the unwavering commitment to thwarting terrorism, asserting that such cowardly acts will not undermine the state’s resolve.
In solidarity, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz condemned the attack, praising the valor of the police team and affirming the government’s steadfast support in combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of citizens.
