The Sindh Department of Information Technology, in collaboration with experts, has identified Thar sand as a game-changer in the realm of computer chip manufacturing.
According to expert analysis, the unique properties of Thar sand make it exceptionally suitable for producing chip layers, addressing the burgeoning demand in the digital market. Consequently, the Department of Information Technology has put forth proposals for establishing a silicon chip wafer foundry, presenting them to both federal and provincial authorities.
Experts underscored that the production of chip wafers requires a blend of coal, sand, water, and electricity, with Thar’s sand emerging as the most ideal component for this purpose.
The conceptualization of the chip wafer foundry comes with an estimated price tag of $450 million, potentially covered by the ambitious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. In a strategic move, 150 acres of land in the Tharparkar locality of Islamkot have been earmarked for the proposed chip wafer factory.
The Sindh Information Technology Department has swiftly moved forward, completing initial documentation for the Chip Wafer Foundry initiative and forwarding it to relevant ministries for consideration. This development marks a significant step towards harnessing local resources to meet the global demand for cutting-edge technology components. Stay tuned for further updates on this transformative endeavor.
