TikTok has successfully countered a cyberattack aimed at several high-profile brand and celebrity accounts, including the news network CNN, a company spokesperson announced on Tuesday.
“We have been collaborating closely with CNN to restore account access and implement enhanced security measures to safeguard their account moving forward,” the spokesperson stated.
While the number of compromised accounts is reportedly “very small,” TikTok is actively assisting affected users to regain access if necessary. A source at TikTok revealed to Reuters that reality TV star Paris Hilton’s account was a target but remained uncompromised.
This security incident comes amid a legal battle for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, which is contesting a U.S. law that mandates the sale of TikTok by next January or face a nationwide ban. The White House advocates for the end of Chinese-based ownership over concerns of national security.
TikTok maintains that it will not share U.S. user data with the Chinese government and asserts that it has implemented significant measures to protect user privacy.
