A devastating accident in Jigawa state, northern Nigeria, claimed the lives of at least 94 people late Tuesday, following the crash and explosion of a fuel tanker. The tragic incident occurred in Majia town, located in the Taura local government area, approximately 530 kilometers north of Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Lawan Shiisu Adam, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, confirmed the fatalities, stating that the victims were local residents who had rushed to the scene to collect fuel after the tanker crashed. An additional 50 individuals sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals in Ringim and Hadejia for treatment.
Authorities are planning a mass burial for the deceased later today.
This disaster highlights the dangers on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads, which are often riddled with potholes and prone to accidents. Last month, another fuel tanker explosion in north-central Nigeria killed 48 people after colliding with a truck carrying passengers and cattle, igniting a catastrophic fire that ensnared multiple vehicles.
This latest incident further underscores the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the country.
