HYDERABAD: Transgender individuals from across Sindh staged the ‘Sindh Moorat March’ on Sunday, demanding constitutional rights, accurate representation in the national census, and equal access to education, healthcare, and employment.
The march began at Rani Bagh with vibrant cultural performances, creating a festive yet resolute atmosphere. Participants then moved towards Shahbaz Building roundabout, voicing their concerns and aspirations.
Bindiya Rani, a key leader, criticized the inaccurate representation of transgender individuals in the census. “Underreporting our population denies us our rights. We are not asking for privileges, just basic facilities like separate medical wards in government hospitals,” she asserted.
Highlighting the challenges faced by her community, Sardaran, a representative from Sukkur, decried the rising violence against transgender people, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. She emphasized the lack of government intervention to safeguard their fundamental rights.
Zehrish Khanzadi expressed frustration over unfulfilled promises. “For three years, we’ve presented 12 key demands, yet only three have been met. We deserve to live with dignity, like everyone else,” she said.
The march also garnered support from allies and activists. Dr. Arfana Mallah, representing the Women Action Forum, praised the initiative as a major step forward. “The struggle for equality must include all marginalized communities to achieve meaningful change,” she said.
Dr. Saima Jafri voiced concerns about gender discrimination in educational institutions, urging collective efforts for equality. Aliya Bukhshal condemned societal norms that alienate transgender children, calling it a violation of human rights.
Shahzadi Rai, a transgender rights activist, urged the government to uphold their constitutional rights. “Granting us our rights won’t disrupt society; it will only strengthen it,” she remarked.
The participants demanded an accurate census count, elimination of barriers in obtaining NICs, and an end to systemic discrimination. They also called for better representation and inclusion in all aspects of society.
The ‘Sindh Moorat March’ highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the transgender community and reinforced their commitment to equality and justice in Sindh and beyond.
