The opening match of the highly anticipated International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) World Blind Games took place on Sunday in Birmingham, showcasing a gripping clash between arch-rivals Pakistan and India. The visually-impaired teams battled it out at the King Edward’s School ground, setting the tone for the thrilling tournament ahead.
Opting to bat after winning the toss, Pakistan’s visually-impaired team, known as the Green Shirts, displayed remarkable determination and skill as they faced off against India VI. In a dynamic display of teamwork and talent, the Green Shirts managed to amass a total of 187 runs, losing eight wickets in the process. Notably, Muhammad Salman shone as he contributed an impressive 50 runs from just 31 deliveries, while the team’s captain, Nisar Ali, and Badar Munir scored 46 off 33 and 37 off 24, respectively.
India’s visually-impaired team, led by Ajay Kumar Reddy’s formidable performance, managed to take four wickets during Pakistan’s innings. Nakula Badanayak also made a significant impact, taking three Pakistani batters down.
In response to Pakistan’s challenging score, the Indian team stepped onto the field with determination, chasing 188 runs for victory. However, Pakistan’s bowling attack proved to be equally potent. Despite some strong performances by India VI’s Sunil Ramesh, who scored 62 runs, and Durga Rao Tompaki, who contributed 40 runs, India struggled to maintain the momentum.
As the pressure mounted in the final overs, India needed 38 runs from the last three overs to secure a victory. However, Matiullah from Pakistan’s team delivered a crucial 18th over, conceding just four runs and putting a dent in India’s aspirations. The Indian team suffered a sudden collapse, losing three wickets in quick succession, including one run-out, resulting in a total of 169 runs for the loss of seven wickets after 20 overs.
Matiullah continued to make his presence felt by taking two wickets for Pakistan. The Indian team faced further setbacks as five of their batters were run out during the course of their innings.
With this exhilarating victory under their belts, Pakistan’s visually-impaired team is now gearing up to face Bangladesh in their next game scheduled for Tuesday. As the IBSA World Blind Games continue to unfold, fans around the world are eagerly anticipating more awe-inspiring moments of sportsmanship and triumph on the field.
