The United States has called on Pakistan and India to exercise restraint following reports of incidents within Pakistani territory involving individuals from India.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution through dialogue. “The United States is not going to intervene directly in this matter, but we strongly encourage both India and Pakistan to avoid escalation and seek resolution through dialogue,” Miller stated.
When pressed on the possibility of imposing sanctions on Indian individuals allegedly involved in these incidents on foreign soil, Miller declined to provide specifics. “I cannot comment on potential sanctions actions. This is not to confirm any forthcoming actions, but our policy is not to publicly discuss such matters,” he explained.
Miller also commended Pakistan for its recent staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to address economic challenges. “Pakistan has taken steps toward stabilizing its economy, and we support its efforts to manage its significant debt burden. It is crucial for the government to continue and expand economic reforms to tackle its economic hurdles,” he added.
“Our commitment to Pakistan’s economic success remains steadfast, and we will maintain engagement through technical agreements, as well as bolstering our trade and investment relations, all of which are vital components of our bilateral relationship.”
Muhammad Aurangzeb, Pakistan’s Finance Minister, is currently in Washington to negotiate a long-term agreement with the IMF aimed at supporting Pakistan’s struggling economy.
