Ukraine faced a sudden onslaught of Russian missiles targeting vital energy facilities in Kyiv and other cities. This attack comes just before President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with US President Joe Biden.
Tragically, five people lost their lives in the southern region of Kherson, while seven, including a 9-year-old girl, were injured in Kyiv. Debris from an infrastructure facility struck a residential building, prompting Mayor Vitalii Klitschko to confirm hospitalizations.
In Kherson, the night was described as “terrible,” with three dead and six injured, along with significant damage to apartment buildings and cars due to Russian shelling. Kharkiv also witnessed two injured individuals after six early-morning strikes, while Cherkasy in central Ukraine reported at least ten injuries during overnight missile attacks.
Ukrenergo, the state energy provider, noted that this marks the first assault on Ukraine’s power infrastructure by Russia in six months, raising concerns as Ukraine gears up for colder weather requiring increased energy for heating. Damage to power facilities in western and central regions has caused blackouts in several areas.
Despite Ukraine’s successful interception of 36 out of 43 missiles, air raid alerts persist in parts of the country, with officials warning of an ongoing missile threat. The situation remains fluid, with international attention on the unfolding events.
