The UAE Consul General, Bakhit Atiq Al-Rumaiti, has underscored the potential of Pakistan’s mango industry to grow internationally by focusing on value addition. Addressing the Future Summit in Karachi, Al-Rumaiti stressed that Pakistani mangoes, which are highly sought after in Dubai, could yield higher returns with improved packaging and branding.
Al-Rumaiti highlighted a striking price disparity: while Pakistani mangoes are sold at $10 in Dubai, their value skyrockets to $120 after repackaging. He emphasized that capturing this added value within Pakistan could significantly boost the agricultural sector and benefit the country’s economy. He noted that Pakistani mangoes are not only appreciated for their quality but are also in high demand among the Pakistani diaspora in Dubai, who often request them as gifts for family.
During his address, Al-Rumaiti also discussed challenges faced by Pakistani investors in the UAE, such as visa restrictions and additional costs, compared to the facilitation provided to UAE investors arriving in Pakistan. He called for greater support for investors, both in Pakistan and abroad, to promote economic growth.
The consul general also acknowledged the UAE’s shift in priorities towards economic development, assuring that any Pakistani seeking investment in the UAE will be directed to the relevant ministry for assistance. With food security being a critical regional concern, Al-Rumaiti advocated for a collaborative effort between Pakistan’s government and stakeholders to enhance the reach and impact of its mango exports.
