Cricket Australia has taken a significant step towards fostering inclusivity and diversity within the sport with the launch of its Multicultural Ambassador Program. Announced as part of the Australian Cricket Multicultural Action Plan, the initiative aims to promote representation and drive positive change across various sectors.
The program, which features 54 individuals from diverse backgrounds spanning government, business, sport, media, and community, marks a milestone in Cricket Australia’s commitment to inclusivity. These inaugural ambassadors, including renowned past and present players like Usman Khawaja, Mel Jones, and Wasim Akram, alongside industry and community leaders, will advocate for diversity and support the goals outlined in the Multicultural Action Plan.
According to Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley, the Multicultural Ambassador Program signifies the organization’s dedication to creating a cricketing community that mirrors contemporary Australian society. By engaging leaders from different sectors, the program aims to break down barriers, build trust, and ensure cricket remains an inclusive sport for all.
Among the ambassadors are Usman Khawaja, who expressed pride in joining the initiative, emphasizing cricket’s role as a unifying force that bridges communities. Similarly, Lisa Sthalekar, former Australian player and cricket commentator, highlighted the importance of celebrating and promoting the sport’s diversity.
The diverse lineup of ambassadors, representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds including Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani, Indigenous Australian, Bangladeshi, Nepali, and Afghani communities, underscores the program’s commitment to addressing challenges related to diversity and inclusion across all levels of cricket and society.
Engaged for an initial two-year period, these ambassadors bring a wealth of experience and insight, ensuring a multifaceted approach to promoting inclusivity in cricket and beyond. With their collective leadership and passion, the Multicultural Ambassador Program aims to create more opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds to engage with the sport and inspire future generations to participate.
