Kane Williamson smashed a brilliant century to propel New Zealand into the tri-series final with a commanding six-wicket win over South Africa on Monday, overshadowing debutant Matthew Breetzke’s record-breaking knock.
Breetzke’s stunning 150—the highest score ever by a batter on ODI debut—helped South Africa post a competitive 304-6 at Gaddafi Stadium. However, Williamson’s unbeaten 133 ensured New Zealand chased down the target with ease in 48.4 overs.
The tri-series serves as a preparatory tournament ahead of the Champions Trophy, which begins on February 19 in Pakistan and the UAE. Pakistan, the third team in the series, will face South Africa on Wednesday in Karachi to determine who meets New Zealand in Friday’s final.
Williamson Ends Century Drought in Style
The Black Caps’ skipper notched his first ODI century in nearly five years, anchoring the chase alongside opener Devon Conway, who fell agonizingly short of his hundred at 97. Their 187-run partnership for the second wicket laid the foundation for New Zealand’s victory, after Will Young departed for 19.
Even with late wickets falling, Williamson remained composed, sealing the win with a boundary.
Breetzke’s Record-Breaking Debut in Vain
South African opener Matthew Breetzke made history with a remarkable 150, surpassing Desmond Haynes’ 148 in 1978 as the highest ODI debut score. The 25-year-old hammered 11 fours and five sixes, reaching his century off 128 balls. However, his efforts couldn’t prevent South Africa’s defeat.
Forced to field four debutants due to injuries and player commitments in a domestic T20 league, South Africa still put up a competitive total, with Wiaan Mulder contributing 64 runs.
New Zealand’s bowling attack was led by Matt Henry (2-59) and Will O’Rourke (2-72), who took key wickets to keep South Africa in check.
Brief Scores:
